Following the announcement early this year of a 500-strong test fleet, Volkswagen has today revealed further details for its upcoming Golf Blue-e-Motion electric vehicle.
The Golf Blue-e-Motion is powered by an electric motor, usurping the regular combustion engine's place in the engine bay. It produces a very reasonable 85kW and 270Nm of torque.
By comparison, the entry-level diesel Golf 77TDI produces 77kW and 250Nm of torque, while the petrol-powered Golf 90TSI produces 90kW and 200Nm.
Energy for the electric motor is drawn from a 26kWh lithium ion battery pack located in the boot and in the transmission tunnel.
While unlikely to be a hot point for the car's target market, the Golf Blue-e-Motion will make its way to 100km/h in 11.8 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 140km/h.
Weighing in at 1545kg (about 200kg heavier then the regular Golf, thanks to the bulky batteries), Volkswagen says the Golf Blue-e-Motion will offer a driving range of around 150km from one charge.
As with many hybrids and EVs, the Golf Blue-e-motion offers three driving profiles or modes: Normal, Comfort+ and Range+.
In the Comfort+ mode, the full 85kW of power is available, allowing a top speed of 135km/h. When the driver activates the Normal mode, power is reduced to 65 kW and top speed is lowered to 115km/h.
Range+ mode limits power to 50kW, with a maximum speed of 105km/h. At the same time, the air conditioning system is completely deactivated to conserve power.
The electric Golf also features regenerative braking, with three brake settings: D through to D3, adjusting the braking feel during coasting and altering the amount of energy recovered from the brakes.
With a full market debut set for 2013, Volkswagen's electric Golf fleet will first be put through its paces by 500 hand-picked consumers throughout Europe.
The tests have been designed to help VW fine-tune its e-Motion electric drive systems ahead of a 2013 launch for the brand's new electric and hybrid range.
