Scheduled for a European launch next month, Renault has released new information for its soon-to-be-released Twingo-based 2010 Renault Wind.

Although based on the tiny Twingo, the Wind is 200mm longer than its hardtop sibling, and will be marketed in Europe as a separate model. Renault says that everything about the Wind's styling, inside and out, is unique to the sleek convertible.

According to Renault, the Wind will appeal to motorists who "lust after a car that is not only distinctive and compact, but also convertible yet practical enough for everyday use".

Strictly a two-seater, the 3830mm long Wind features a unique roof that, rather than folding backwards, lifts and flips 180 degrees into the boot.

Two petrol engine options will be offered for the Wind; one a 75kW 1.4 litre turbo, and the other a naturally-aspirated 1.6 litre engine producing 100kW and 160Nm of torque.

Both engines will be paired with a five-speed manual transmission, giving the 1.4 litre engine a fuel consumption rating of 6.3 l/100km, and 7.0 l/100km for the 1.6 litre engine.

Although now quite different in its styling, the Renault Wind first appeared as a concept at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show.

While the Twingo light car is not planned for an Australian launch at this stage, a competitively-priced Wind could potentially take on the likes of the Mini Cooper Cabrio and the Peugeot 207CC.

In Europe, the Wind will take on the convertible B-segment - a market which sees around 75,000 to 150,000 sales each year.

With a right-hand-drive UK launch scheduled for July, Renault Australia is at least one step closer to making a business case for a local launch. The French carmaker's Australian arm has been contacted for comment - watch this space.
