PEUGEOT HAS ANNOUNCED the Australian launch of the updated 407 sedan, available in two model grades - SR and ST - and powered exclusively by Peugeot's 2.0 litre HDi FAP diesel engine.

Developing 100kW and 320Nm of torque paired to the six-speed automatic and 103kW with the six-speed manual, the updated 407 achieves a fuel economy of 7.1 l/100km in auto form and 5.6 l/100km with the manual transmission.

To bring the 407's weight down and improve performance, light alloy metals have been used for the car's bulkier suspension components.

Cobapress aluminium has been used where possible, including the bonnet and more complex-shaped parts.

The 2010 model year update sees a number of interior and exterior cosmetic updates, and body-coloured protection mouldings, trimmed with a chrome bead finish, replace the black mouldings of the previous model.

A slightly redesigned air intake dominates the face of the updated 407, featuring a more prominent strip of three horizontal chrome bars.

The rear end gets a completely redesigned lower rear panel and restyled taillights, featuring a ruby red housing and a white finish to the reversing light.

"It's a more sophisticated and luxurious package; it is certainly more stylish both inside and out,” said Ken Thomas, general manager of Peugeot Automobiles Australia.

“Peugeot’s engineers have also worked hard at improving the vehicle’s NVH suppression.

“The result is a car that feels even more solid and refined than the previous model – and you really notice a difference from behind the wheel.

“The refined HDi diesel technology offers a combination of enjoyable driving characteristics and impressive fuel economy and emissions figures.”

Inside, the 407 takes on a more upmarket image, with a pearlescent black finish to the centre console, air vent trims, door handle inserts and door panel trims on all ST models.

Contrasting against the pearlescent black are the aluminium metallic highlights that come with the black leather interior, and beige leather is paired with 'Carmin Burl' wood highlights.

Despite these significant updates to the 2010 407 range, pricing now starts at $39,990 (Recommended Vehicle Price) for the SR Manual model - exactly $1000 less than the outgoing 2009 model.
