PEUGEOT HAS FINALLY joined the SUV club in Australia, releasing its high-riding 4007 into local showrooms today.

The Outlander-based 4007 represents a number of firsts for the French automaker: not only is it the first SUV it's ever offered, but it is also the first AWD Peugeot and the first Peugeot passenger car to be equipped with a twin-clutch gearbox.

The 4007 has been on sale overseas since 2008, and so far over 25,000 have been sold globally.

Peugeot has high hopes that Australia's SUV-friendly market will deliver solid sales for the 4007, and believes it's got the right hardware to compete against the more established SUV competition.

Available with a 2.2 litre HDi diesel as the sole engine choice, the 4007 takes the turbocharged motor's 115kW and 380Nm to all four wheels via a six-speed twin-clutch gearbox and a Mitsubishi-developed AWD system.

The part-time AWD system typically sends 85 percent of torque to the front wheels, diverting more drive to the rear axle only when front-end slip is detected.

It can also be locked in either 2WD or 4WD mode, depending on whether the driver expects dry roads or slippery conditions.

Peugeot's new Dual Clutch System gearbox was developed in partnership with Getrag, and features a sequential manual shifting mode and steering wheel-mounted paddles.

It's available on both the 4007 ST and 4007 SV, however a traditional six-speed Aisin manual transmission is offered on the base-model ST.

The 4007 is available as either a five or seven-seater, and is available in either base ST spec or range-topping SV trim.

The ST ships with 16-inch alloy wheels, climate control, fabric trim, six airbags, stability control, cruise control and electronic rear parking sensors.

The SV also gets climate control, six airbags, stability control, cruise control and parking sensors, but adds 18-inch wheels, rear privacy glass, chrome kick plates, Xenon headlights and leather trim.

The SV's front seats are also heated, with the driver's seat electrically adjustable.

Luggage space is a sizable 589 litres with the third-row seats stowed, expanding to 1691 litres with the second-row seats folded.

The 2010 Peugeot 4007 is now available across Australia, with retail pricing starting from $45,490. Full pricing for the 4007 range is as follows:

4007 ST 6-sp manual 5-seat: $45,490

4007 ST 6-sp DCS auto 5-seat: $47,990

4007 ST 6-sp DCS auto 7-seat: $49,190

4007 SV 6-sp DCS auto 7-seat: $54,190
