The Shanghai Auto Industry Corporation (SAIC) has unveiled the production version of its Roewe 550 based MG6 at the Shanghai Auto Show.

To be sold under the MG brand in Europe, the MG6 will be the first new MG launched in the UK  since the ZS and ZT models, way back in 2001.

A sedan variant will also make its way to Europe, based on the Chinese market Roewe 550, with sales expected to begin in early 2010.

While detailed specifications are not available just yet, it's understood that a 1.8 litre four-cylinder turbo engine will be available.

The Rover K-Series engine has been around for a while now and has in the past produced as much as 142kW (192hp). This is expected to be the most popular engine choice.

Final homologation testing is currently being undertaken to clear the MG6 for sale in Europe.

A new range of smaller cars is also said to be in the works, with SAIC looking to fill the gaps in the MG and Roewe lineups.

Chinese markets would receive the Roewe 350, while the same car would be sold as the MG5 elsewhere.

There is also talk of an updated MG TF roadster, but we'll bring you more information on that as it comes to light.
