Mercedes-Benz has launched the updated-for-2011 ML 63 AMG in Europe, bringing a number of modest updates ahead of the all-new 2012 ML-Class arrives late next year.

Styling for the updated ML 63 AMG is relatively unchanged, limited to a new bonnet design, darkened headlights and taillights and revised front and rear underguards.

Mechanically, the story remains the same, with power coming from the same 6.2 litre V8 as before, developing 375kW and 630Nm of torque routed through the same seven-speed AMG Speedshift transmission to all four wheels.

The updated ML 63 AMG is available in Australia now, and pricing remains unchanged at $171,500 (manufacturer's list price).

The next-generation AMG-powered ML-Class will draw power from Mercedes' new 5.5 litre twin-turbo V8 engine, likely retaining AMG's '63' nomenclature.

Featuring direct-injection, the new smaller-capacity twin-turbo-charged V8 produces 400kW and 800Nm of torque, bettering the naturally-aspirated 6.2 litre engine's 390kW and 630Nm of torque.

Already confirmed for service in the new S63 AMG, Mercedes-Benz says the new engine offers a 25 percent improvement to fuel consumption, using just 10.5 l/100km. The 0-100km/h sprint is covered in 4.5 seconds - one hundredth of a second faster than the current model.
