MAZDA AUSTRALIA has today announced the launch of the 2010 Mazda2, with an all-new sedan bodystyle joining the existing Hatch line-up.

The announcement follows confirmation late last year that Mazda Australia would begin sourcing its Mazda2 light car from Thailand instead of Japan's Hiroshima plant.


While the 2010 Mazda2 line-up has been joined by a sedan bodystyle, the overall styling of Mazda's smallest offering is largely an update of the outgoing 2009 model.

Adopting the styling language now found on the Mazda6, Mazda3, RX-8, MX-5, CX-7 and CX-9, the new Mazda2 gets the same five-point 'smile' lower grille and large, vertical foglight housings.

The upper grille has been touched up, now featuring a slimmer design top to bottom, extending downward in the centre to accommodate the large Mazda badge.

The sedan, identical to its hatch sibling at the front end, features a rear-end that is both distinctively different, yet clearly inspired by the wider Mazda range.

According to Mazda, the sedan variant, 247mm longer than the hatch, offers superior aerodynamics thanks to its longer and straighter roofline. The difference is slight however, with the hatch showing a drag coefficient of 0.32Cd - compared to the sedan's 0.30Cd.

The 2010 Mazda2 Sedan is fitted with 15-inch wheels as standard, while the range-topping Genki hatch features 16-inch alloys and a sportier body kit with fog lights up front.

Eight colours are available for both bodystyles, with six of them being a mica or metallic finish. Best of all, the classier mica/metallic paint jobs are a no-cost option for the Mazda2, while some competitor models carry up to a $400 premium for the option.


Inside, the updated Mazda2 is largely identical to its predecessor, although new seat trims are featured, including a grey/black combination for the entry-level Neo, while the Maxx and Genki models get a black/red/grey trim with higher-quality materials.

The top-of-the-line Genki hatch adds a leather-trimmed steering wheel for a slightly more premium-end feel.

With 450 litres of storage capacity in the boot compared to the hatch's 250 litres (469 litres with the rear seats down), Mazda Australia Marketing Manager Alastair Doak said the Mazda2 Sedan will help the model reach a different type of customer.

“Having listened to customer feedback and studied the light segment very closely, we believe that the new Mazda2 sedan offers the potential to engage with a whole new set of customers,” Mr Doak said.

The Mazda2 sedan, available only in the middle-of-the-range Maxx trim, features a noticeably wide opening, while link-type hinges work to maximise storage space.

As with many models in its class, the rear seats of the Mazda2 sedan fold down to make room for longer items in the boot.


The Mazda2 line-up features air-conditioning, power windows and power mirrors as standard, along with remote central locking, driver's seat height adjustment and a four-speaker audio system with USB and Aux connectivity.

Electronic stability and traction control are standard across the range, even on the $16,500 base-model Neo manual - priced at about $500 less than the outgoing 2009 equivalent.

Other safety features include side and curtain SRS airbags ($400 option with entry-level Neo), anti-lock brakes and Electronic Brake-force Distribution and emergency brake assist.


Power for both the Sedan and Hatch models remains unchanged, the 1.5 litre four-cylinder petrol engine developing 76kW, paired with manual and automatic transmissions.  Torque is down 2Nm thanks to Euro-IV compliance tweaks to the engine, now listed producing 135Nm at 5000rpm.

Fuel efficiency for the manual model is listed as 6.4 l/100km for both bodystyles, while the four-speed automatic models return a fuel consumption figure of 6.8 l/100km.

The rear suspension of the updated Mazda2 has been tweaked, with new twin-tube dampers designed to create less internal friction and provide a more comfortable ride on rougher surfaces.

Front dampers remain a twin-tube setup as before, but these too have been re-tuned for greater handling and an improved ride. The range-topping Genki features a more sports-oriented suspension arrangement than its Neo and Maxx siblings.
