KIA’S SECOND GENERATION Sorento SUV is set for its European debut at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

Although full specifications are yet to be announced, the 2010 Kia Sorento will join the updated Kia cee’d on the show floor. The all new Sorento promises to deliver better handling and lower weight then its body-on-frame predecessor.

Kia expects the all new 2.2 litre R turbo-diesel engine, which produces 149kW of power and 435Nm of torque, to be Europe’s favoured powerplant. Also on offer will be a 130kW 2.4 litre V6 and 208kW 3.5 litre V6.

Drive will be channelled to the Sorento’s wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox or Kia’s newly developed six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variants are expected to be offered.

As well as the dynamic enhancements provided by the monocoque frame, Kia has also finessed the lines of the larger Sorento. The longer 4685mm body of the new car has a coefficient of drag of 0.38 - down 0.43 compared to the current car.

"With the new Kia Sorento, we have created an all-new, 'Highline Cruiser' that we believe offers buyers the benefits of an exciting all-rounder with a much broader appeal," Kia Motors Europe’s General Manager of Marketing Panu Vainamo said

In addition to focusing on engineering, the new Sorento will also include a range of available luxury features including a panoramic sunroof, 10-speaker audio and a reversing camera.

Rear parking sensors, tire-pressure monitoring and ESC will also be available. Safety-wise Kia has designed the car to achieve a five-star Euro NCAP crash rating.

European sales will start later this year, with an Australian introduction expected in early 2010.
