THE UNVEILING of the 2010 Jaguar XJ on July 9 is just over a week away, and, as we draw closer, Jaguar is slowly revealing more and more information about its revitalised flagship (while keeping us in the dark on the question of its looks).

The fourth instalment in a series of short videos introducing us to the finer points of the new car, this latest video features Mike Cross, Chief Engineer for Vehicle Integrity, walking through the philosophical approach behind the XJ's engineering in making it a genuine driver's car.

"We've tried to balance all of the driving attributes. The car, firstly, needs to drive like it looks.  The dynamics are both agile and comfortable, but we've also tried to make the engine and transmission both agile and responsive, but also smooth," Cross says.

"We've got a light, stiff body, and that allows us to engineer precision into the suspension, without engineering in harshness."

Cross describes the new XJ as a balance of response and smoothness with comfort and agility, offering a 'power' sound when pushed, but also quiet and refined when cruising.

A selection of petrol and diesel engines will be on offer for the new XJ, ranging from a V6 diesel all the way up to a 380kW (510hp) supercharged V8.

The supercharged cat will not be the XJR, either, with Jaguar confirming it is saving the R designation for a hi-po version of the XJ it has planned for the future.

Standard and long wheel-base variants will be available, with both utilising Jaguar's new generation of aerospace-inspired aluminium body architecture.

Orders will be taken at the car's debut in July with deliveries expected to begin in early 2010.
