THE 2010 HOLDEN COMMODORE, along with the 2010 Statesman and Caprice, has been awarded a 5-Star crash safety rating with the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

The Commodore achieved its first 5-Star ANCAP rating with the 2009 update to the VE range, which included a front passenger seat belt reminder and an energy-dispersing shroud around the steering column to channel harmful forces away from the driver’s knees.

Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Alan Batey, said that Holden has always had confidence in the Commodore's real-world safety capabilities.

"The five-star result reflects our rigorous approach to all aspects of vehicle safety," Mr Batey said in a statement today.

“We are committed to a policy of continuous improvement which is highlighted with the launch of this exciting range.”

Standard safety features across the Commodore and Statesman ranges include six airbags and Electronic Stability Control, incorporating Anti-Lock Brakes, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Electronic Brake Assist and a Traction Control System.

Dual-fuel LPG-converted versions of the VE Commodore and special edition International sedans also received a 5-Star ANCAP rating.

The VE Commodore ute maintains its previous 4-Star rating.

Holden revealed the 2010 Holden Commodore earlier this month, marking the first major mechanical update for the VE Commodore and WM Statesman ranges.

The current 3.6 litre V6 engine has been succeeded by two new engines: one a 3.0 litre direct-injected V6 and the other a 3.6 litre V6, also with direct injection.

The 3.0 litre V6 will be the standard engine in the Commodore Omega and Berlina, with the Calais, Statesman, Caprice and SV6 (below) receiving the new direct-injected 3.6 litre engine.

A new six-speed automatic transmission is now standard across the Commodore, Statesman and Caprice range, replacing the current four and five-speed auto gearboxes.

The 2010 Commodore and Statesman ranges will be launched in September.
