FOLLOWING ITS INTERNATIONAL reveal early last year, BMW Australia has today announced the newest addition to its local line-up, the 2010 BMW 5 Series GT.
Going against the grain of the more prosaic 5 Series Touring, the GT offers the elevated seating and packaging of an SUV, as well as the handy addition of a lift back. The two-piece boot uses a patented hinging process that allows for both a small porthole opening or a more conventional wide-open lift gate.
Sharing the same mechanical underpinnings as its sedan sibling, the 5 Series GT has been developed with two petrol engines and one diesel mill, with the range-topping 550i developing 300kW from its 4.4 litre turbo V8.
Positioned between the 5 Series sedan and the range-topping 7 Series, BMW says the 5 Series Gran Turismo has been designed to reflect the "exclusivity and luxury of 'first class travel'".
While the 5 Series GT is built on the same platform as the regular 5 Series, the big Grand Turismo features a coupe-like profile and a higher X6-inspired riding position. For the first time on a BMW, the 5 Series GT gets frameless doors all round, emphasising the coupe silhouette.
BMW says the 5 Series GT offers a combination of sportiness and elegance in its design. Up front, the traditional BMW styling elements are all there: the large kidney-shaped grille, large air intakes and the characteristic dual round headlights, recognisable by their 'halo' LED rings.
Along the GT's profile, a high character line runs from the outer edge of the headlights right through to the contours of the rear light clusters.
Creating a somewhat compact look, the rear end of the 5 Series GT is characterised by the two outer rooflines and shoulder lines coming together in the airflow spoiler of the tailgate.
Inside, the 5 Series GT's dash is divided horizontally, featuring BMW's Black Panel technology and a 10.2-inch Control Display for the iDrive system.
BMW says the aim of the big GT's interior design was to provide a self-contained space, surrounding or cocooning the car's occupants.
In the rear, the 5 Series GT can be optioned with either a three-seat row (including forward/backward adjustment) or two single seats, the latter allowing for adjustment not only forward and backward, but also to the backrest angle.
Rear storage is aided by a tailgate that opens in two parts; the full tailgate and the lower boot-like lid. When the lower boot-lid is opened, the rear seats completely separate the rear storage compartment from the cabin, protecting occupants from the elements.
With the rear seats in the upright position, rear storage capacity is 440 litres. Moving the rear seats forward increases capacity to 590 litres, while folding them flat opens up a huge 1700 litres of space.
Equipment and Features
Among the 5 Series GT's standard features is BMW ConnectedDrive, a range of systems that include cockpit and climate control, the iDrive control system with direct selection buttons, satellite navigation and audiovisual entertainment, and a heads-up display.
The audio system boasts both a CD player, six-DVD changer and USB/AUX-In port. An 80gb hard drive is featured with the optional navigation system Professional (standard on the BMW 535i Gran Tursimo and BMW 550i Gran Tursimo).
Also included with ConnectedDrive is a range of driver safety systems that include High-Beam Assistant, optional Lane Change Warning and Lane Departure Warning. New generation BMW Night Vision is available on the options list, and can detect individual pedestrians while driving.
Cruise control in the 5 Series GT features a brake function as standard, while Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go comes as an option, maintaining a consistent distance from the vehicle ahead by intervening in drive management and building up brake pressure whenever required.
PDC Park Distance Control, located at the front and rear, is standard. This is supplemented by a Rear View Camera, with Surround View also available as an option.
Surround View consists of Side View and Top View. Side View uses two cameras integrated in the front wheel arches enabling the driver to check traffic coming from the side at an early point. Top View provides an even more detailed overview of road conditions with the help of two additional cameras integrated in the rear-view mirrors.
On the safety front, the 5 Series GT features frontal and hip/thorax airbags, along with curtain head airbags at the side, three-point inertia-reel airbags with belt force limiters, belt latch tensioners, and crash-activated headrests.
The 2010 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is offered with three engines, starting with a 180kW six-cylinder in-line diesel and topping out with a 300kW V8 petrol engine, the latter featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo and High Precision Injection. Between the two is a 225kW six-cylinder in-line petrol engine.

All 5 Series GT variants are fitted with BMW's eight-speed automatic transmission, until now available only with the twelve-cylinder BMW 760i saloon, designed to combine gearshift comfort and sportiness with lower fuel consumption and emissions.
The 5 Series Gran Turismo's suspension system includes a double track control arm front axle and an Integral-V rear axle. Air suspension is standard at the reat axle.
As an alternative to hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering with Servotronic featured as standard, the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo can be optioned with Integral Active Steering, a feature that first appeared with the new BMW 7 Series.
Dynamic Drive Control is standard, giving drivers the ability to choose between specifically tuned settings for Normal, Sport and Sport+ modes. DDC influences the progressive curve on the gas pedal, engine response, the map control line for steering assistance, the gearshift dynamics on the eight-speed automatic transmission, and the response thresholds of DSC Dynamic Stability Control.
BMW's EfficientDynamics systems are also featured across the 5 Series GT range, including Brake Energy Regeneration, on-demand control of ancillary units such as the electric coolant pump, along with minimum roll resistance tyres and optimised aerodynamics.
Pricing of the exclusive new 5 Series Gran Tursimo will be positioned in between the new BMW 5 Series and BMW 7 Series.
