Okay, it?s a bit of a dodgy picture but this is quite possibly the very first spy photo of the next generation 2009 VW Golf.

Volkswagen are desperate to develop a cheaper to manufacture replacement for the current Golf which despite its popularity is not bringing home the bacon. VW engineered the current model Golf so well that it costs too much to manufacture and the piddling profits on each car are sending the board of Volkswagen AG grey with worry.

Motor Trend magazine believe that the next gen Golf will be ready late in 2008 and go on sale in Europe as a 2009 model. The big question with the 2009 Golf will be one of quality. Can VW reduce the cost to build each unit without compromising the built like a bank vault quality? Will they compromise the quality of interior materials and trim? Given that the Golf is a best seller thanks largely due to these qualities one would hope that VW have found a way to achieve their cost reduction requirements without compromising quality.

The styling of the 2009 Golf has been overseen by Volkswagen?s head designer Walter se Silva. It is expected that the look will be new and somewhat different to the current Golf with a move away from the shared Passat style front end.

Existing powerplants are expected to carryover with the addition of a BlueMotion diesel option as well as a hybrid version. No doubt R32, GT and GTi performance variants will also feature in the 2009 Golf line-up.
