The current MkV GTI arrived as a breath of fresh air for enthusiasts everywhere after the somewhat underwhelming MkIV Golf GTI - which was essentially little more than the regular Golf with a turbo, some Recaro seats, and a set of 16-inch alloys.
It looks like enthusiasts can breathe easy now that the first images of the next generation GTI have surfaced. And it looks a class act (showing that Volkswagen has not forgotten what can happen when you try to play it cheap).
Visually, the MkVI GTI is not too dissimilar to the current model. The bespoke individual rims still feature, albeit slightly updated, and the face is uncluttered and nicely aggressive. The most striking element of the new design is the wide open front air dam, with the black colouring extending to the fog lights on either side.
Evo magazine says power is boosted roughly 7-8kW over the current model, giving a new number of 155kW at the fly. New features include the XDS LSD, and the Scirocco?s Adaptive Chassis Control System which offers normal, comfort, and sport settings.
Thankfully, the days of Auto or DSG only transmissions are not upon us yet, and the new GTI will offer a traditional six-speed alongside the DSG semi-auto (which is no slouch, anyway).
