2009 Volkswagen Concept Bluesport Unveiled In Detroit

Just when you were starting to think that the small sportscar segment was looking a little boring, along comes this pearl from Volkswagen – the Concept Bluesport. VW took the covers of this very ‘production ready’ and purposeful looking roadster concept in Detroit overnight, and what a stunner it is.

Volkswagen claims that its vision in creating the roadster was “maximum driving fun with minimal fuel consumption” .

The Concept BlueSport is 3.99 metres long and features a Flex Silver exterior and orange fabric convertible top. Located behind the two sport seats is a 132kW/180PS Clean Diesel (TDI) with common rail injection and a downstream NOx storage catalytic converter.

Power delivery is provided to the rear-wheels (you read that correctly...) via a six-speed DSG dual clutch transmission.

Performance is suitably impressive, with the Concept BlueSport taking just 6.6 seconds to hit 100 km/h on its way to a top speed of 226 km/h.

Being a diesel, the performance doesn’t necessarily come at a price. In fact, VW has managed to coax an outstandingly low fuel consumption out of this particular diesel - just 4.3 l/100 km. Part of the secret is VW’s so-called ‘Eco mode’: an automatic start-stop and energy regeneration system. Together they propel the Concept BlueSport to an additional fuel saving of up to 0.2 litres per 100 kilometres in city driving.

“It is the symbiosis of outstanding technology and timeless Volkswagen design that makes this car an exceptional sports car. Its styling is clear and is reduced to the essentials; the car body itself has a lean and linear structure," explains Volkswagen chief designer Walter de Silva.

The interior features an intuitive and easy-to-operate touchscreen and leather upholstered seats in a lightweight single-piece seatback construction.
