TO MARK THE model's 15th birthday, Toyota Australia has released the special edition 2009 Toyota RAV4 Edge.

Joining the limited edition Yaris Edge, the RAV4 Edge - based on the RAV4 CV - offers over $2000 of added features for $750.

Features unique to the RAV4 Edge include five 17-inch alloy wheels, reverse-parking sensors, roof rails and privacy glass (tinted, that is) for the rear, rear-quarter and rear door windows.

Inside, Edge edition features include a six-stack CD sound system with LCD display, Bluetooth telephone and audio streaming compatibility, USB audio input, premium steering wheel and gearshift knob, and front and rear carpet mats.

Like the RAV4 CV upon which it's based, the Edge is powered by a 2.4 litre petrol engine, and is available with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

Safety features include twin front airbags and active front-seat head restraints.

The RAV4 Edge starts at $34,240 (manufacturer's list price) for the five-speed manual transmission model.

SUVs continue to be strong sellers for Toyota. In 2009, the Japanese carmaker sold 50,000 SUVs in Australia - 14,122 of them being the RAV4.

Overall RAV4 sales, since its introduction in 1994, are expected to top 150,000 in the second half of this year.
