Porsche's new glass-roofed 911 Targa is on its way to Australian shores later this year, and is set to feature the latest in Porsche technology.
The 911 Targa's 1.54-square-metre glass roof is composed of two segments, with a sliding roof at the front and a glass panel at the rear. Opening within seven seconds, the roof offers an open space of over 400mm.
Powered by a 254kW 3.6 litre flat-six engine, the 911 Targa 4, along with the 283kW 3.8 litre 911 Targa 4S, will come bearing a choice of either Porsche's PDK Porsche-Doppelkupplung, or a double-clutch gearbox, replacing the optional Tiptronic S automatic box.
Both models will feature Porsche's electronically controlled Porsche Traction Management system, which steps in for the previous viscous all-wheel-drive system.
As with the other 911 models, the Targa 4 and Targa 4S are armed with direct fuel injection, which Porsche claims offers an increase in engine power of up to 8.5 percent, reduced fuel consumption by 11.2 percent, and a decrease in CO2 emissions of 13.6 percent.
As a result, The 911 Targa 4 rockets to 100km/h in 5.0 seconds, while the 911 Targa 4S splits the hair at 4.7 seconds.
The 911 Targa 4 and 911 Targa 4S are expected to land in Aussie showrooms on October 25?along with the Carrera 4 and 4S models?and pricing will be announced soon.

Australia. The new Targa version of the 911 will showcase the latest in Porsche road-going sports car technology when it goes on sale in Australia later this year.
The new glass roof Porsche will feature the latest innovations introduced by Porsche in the new 911: Two new engines with direct fuel injection that improves both performance and fuel economy of the new model as well as the fast-shifting PDK Porsche-Doppelkupplung or double-clutch gearbox that replaces the optional Tiptronic S automatic transmission.
Furthermore, the 911 Targa model ? again available exclusively in Targa 4 and Targa 4S forms ? now features the electronically controlled PTM Porsche Traction Management system which takes the place of the previous viscous allwheel drive system.
The 911 Targa 4 is powered by a 3.6-litre flat-six engine developing maximum output of 254 kW to give the car a top speed of 284 km/h. The engine featured in the 911 Targa 4S displaces 3.8 litres, developing maximum output of 283 kW and accelerating this outstanding sports car to a top speed of 297 km/h.
The visual highlight of the 911 Targa, as before, is the 1.54-square-metre glass roof made up of two segments, the elegant sliding roof at the front and the rear glass panel. When opened completely, the roof slides within seven seconds beneath the rear glass panel, offering an open space above the passenger compartment measuring 0.45 square metres.
The sliding roof comes as standard with a new sunblind offering even greater privacy than before and, when closed, covering the entire area of the sliding roof and opening and closing electrically independently of the roof itself. The glass roof and the rear glass panel come in special anti-sunglare glass, protecting the occupants even in bright sunshine from UV radiation and excessive heat.
With the launch of the new 911, Porsche has introduced direct fuel injection into the company?s range of sports cars. The advantages are an increase in engine power by up to 8.5 per cent, a reduction in fuel consumption by 11.2 per cent, and a decrease in CO2 emissions by 13.6 per cent, depending on the respective model and its features.
The optional new PDK or double-clutch gearbox features seven forward gears, offering an interesting alternative to the standard manual six-speed gearbox. PDK replaces the former Tiptronic S transmission and excels in particular through its unparalleled speed in shifting gears, combined with superior smoothness and all round fuel economy.
Featuring this outstanding PDK transmission, the new Targa leaves hardly
anything to be desired in terms of dynamic driving performance: The 911 Targa 4 accelerates to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds and the even more powerful Targa 4S completes the same sprint in 4.7 seconds. By comparison, when fitted with the standard six-speed manual gearbox, an extra 0.2 secs is required for the sprint on each model respectively.
Yet another change in technology comes on the car?s all-wheel drive system: In the new 911 Targa electronically controlled PTM Porsche Traction Management (as featured on the current 911 Turbo) replaces the former all-wheel drive with its viscous multiple-plate clutch. This superior system combines the driving enjoyment so typical of a 911 with an even higher standard of driving stability, traction, and agile handling.
To ensure supreme grip at all times, PTM feeds exactly the right share of engine power and traction additionally to the front wheels in every driving situation through an electronically controlled multipleplate clutch.
And as on all new Carrera 4 models, a mechanical rear axle differential featured as standard gives the car even greater driving dynamics.
The new Targa 4 and 4S go on sale in Australia on October 25, the same date as the Carrera 4 and 4S models. Pricing for the new 911 series ? including the Targa pair ? will be announced in the coming weeks.
