Hyundai displayed its baby i20 compact car at the Melbourne International Motor Show today.

Set to go on sale in Australia in the third quarter of this year, the i20 is a size smaller than Hyundai’s acclaimed i30, and, according to Hyundai, it boasts premium features and technology usually seen on larger, more expensive models.

In addition to being feature packed, the i20 also features a long(ish) wheel base that has allowed designers to come up with a spacious interior, defying the i20’s light car status.

Designed by Hyundai’s European design studio in Russelsheim, Germany, the i20 carries through the Hyundai signature ‘i’ series 'face', incorporating a bold chrome-topped grille flanked by teardrop headlamps.

“The team at Hyundai and our Dealers are really excited about what the all-new i20 will offer Australian consumers,” Kevin McCann, Director of Sales and Marketing at Hyundai said.

“With Generation X and Y turning to high quality cars offering value for money, the i20 will be specified to fulfil those needs and compete with products like Mazda 2, Toyota Yaris and Honda Jazz.”

Pricing will be made available closer to the i20's launch in the middle of this year.
