Mazda has announced the upcoming release of the most sensible version of the '6' range – the MZR CD, which will feature a high-performance 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine.

The new Mazda6 MZR-CD sports hatch and wagon will, according to Mazda, “boost the performance to match expensive European luxury cars at a more affordable price, bringing turbo diesel performance and exemplary environmental credentials within reach of everyone” .

Mazda’s new 2.2-litre common-rail turbo diesel engine is a new-generation powerplant, which means it features the latest direct-injection technology and that means more power, and even more impressive efficiency, than the 2.0-litre it replaces. How much better is it, we hear you ask? Well, power is up 31kW to an impressive 136kW while torque has risen by 40Nm to a nice round 400Nms.

"This spirited and economical new-generation engine will further cement Mazda's leadership as the only Japanese brand offering diesel-powered passenger cars for environmentally conscious Australians,” said Mazda Australia Managing Director Doug Dickson.

So, its packing plenty of punch and with 400Nms on tap will be far-better suited to the 6’s portly frame than the petrol four, but, as always with a diesel, the big benefit is efficiency. The new Mazda6 MZR-CD is expected to deliver a combined-cycle fuel economy number similar to the 5.9L/100km of the less-powerful outgoing model.

"This new diesel engine will deliver on the seemingly conflicting attributes of robust and refined, powerful and efficient. And we're confident it'll arrive with a compelling sub-$40,000 price."

Mr Dickson also drew parallels between the new diesel and Mazda’s Zoom Zoom philosophy saying that, “the Mazda6's high-tech new engine will make diesel synonymous with exhilaration” . In fact the new Mazda6 MZR-CD is the first step towards Mazda's Sustainable Zoom-Zoom commitment to improve fuel efficiency by 30 per cent across its range by 2015.

"The new Mazda6 MZR-CD will appeal to economy-minded buyers and true driving enthusiasts. With 400Nm on tap from just 1,800rpm, and mated to a sporty six-speed manual transmission, it will deliver spirited in-gear acceleration and an exhilarating driving experience."

The Mazda6 MZR-CD is expected to be on sale in December 2008 in both hatch and wagon bodystyles. It is the second turbo diesel passenger car in Mazda's current range alongside the Mazda3 MZR-CD which is priced from $29,500.
