FOLLOWING THE Mazda3's Australian launch in April, Mazda has today launched the new 2009 Mazda3 Diesel.

Powered by the same 2.2 litre common-rail turbo-diesel engine as the 2010 CX-7, the Mazda3 Diesel produces 110kW at 3500rpm and a class-leading 360Nm of torque at 1800rpm.

With refinements to its Variable Geometry Turbocharger and a revised piston design, the Mazda3 Diesel is the Japanese carmaker's most efficient small car ever, delivering a fuel consumption figure of 5.7 l/100km on the combined cycle.

The Mazda3 Diesel is offered with a six-speed manual transmission only.

The 2.2 litre diesel engine joins the existing 2.0 litre (carried over from the previous generation) and 2.5 litre petrol engines.

The Mazda3 Diesel, available in both the sedan and hatch bodystyle, is the fourth diesel in the company's line-up, following the Mazda6 Diesel Sports Hatch, Mazda 6 Diesel Wagon and the CX-7 Diesel Sports.

Equipment, safety and features of the Mazda3 diesel follow the petrol models, including air-conditioning, Bluetooth and MP3 compatible audio, cruise control, leather wrapped gear shift knob and steering wheel, and a multi information display with ambient temperature gauge.

Safety features include Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Traction Control System (TCS), Antilock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA).

A full complement of six airbags is standard across the Mazda3 range, as are active front head restraints.

Pricing

The 2009 Mazda3 Diesel starts at $29,715 for both the sedan and hatch, excluding region-specific fees, dealer delivery and on-road costs.
