Following its Australian debut at the 2009 Melbourne International Motor Show in February, the all-new 2010 BMW Z4 has arrived in Australia and will go on sale from late May.

Featuring a two-piece retractable hardtop for the first time, the new Z4 Roadster is powered by three six-cylinder engines, lead by the range-topping sDrive35i.

Powered by a 3.0 litre twin-turbo high precision injection engine developing 225kW and 400Nm of torque, the BMW Z4 Roadster sDrive35i powers to 100km/h in 5.1 seconds.

The BMW Z4 sDrive30i features a naturally-aspirated version of the 3.0 litre petrol engine, producing 190kW and 310Nm of torque, while the entry-level Z4 sDrive23i offers 150kW and 250Nm of torque from its 2.5 litre six.

A seven-speed sports automatic transmission can be optioned with the Z4 sDrive35i.

Other performance options include BMW Adaptive M suspension, a traditional six-speed automatic gearbox with wheel-mounted gear paddles (except for the sDrive35i, for which the seven-speed unit is available), light alloy wheels up to 19 inches in diameter, and sports seats.

The BMW Z4 sDrive35i starts at $116,900, while the sDrive30i and sDrive23i models start at $98,100 and $86,200 respectively.

Where the previous generation Z4 featured separate Roadster and Coupé models, the all-new Z4 Roadster is offered in only one body style – but this time it comes with a light-weight retractable hardtop roof, bringing with it the best of both worlds.

“The BMW Z4 Roadster exists to deliver an exhilarating driving experience for the enthusiast,” Stavros Yallouridis, Managing Director of BMW Group Australia.

“We are delighted to welcome this new generation model with its powerful engines, innovative transmission and for the first time on a BMW two-seater, a two-piece retractable hardtop.”

The new Z4 Roadster features a slightly larger body shell, including larger doors for easier ingress and egress (gettin' in and out).

Standard equipment includes cruise control with brake function, Park Distance Control front and rear, electromechanical parking brake, electronic differential lock, Dynamic Driving Control, Bi-Xenon headlights, heated seats, engine stop/start button, Bluetooth handsfree, AUX-in and USB connectivity, and Kansas leather upholstery equipped with BMW SunReflective technology.

While the standard equipment list is extensive, cashed up buyers will enjoy the depth of the optional extras, which includes power seat adjustment, lumbar support, adaptive headlights, TV function, Professional Navigation and extended leather in the standard ‘Kansas’ seat trim.

“This combination of features will give us the opportunity to make the best case yet for BMW style, performance and safety in a very sporting machine,” Mr Yallouridis said.

The Character Package ‘Design Pure White’ includes Nappa leather trim in ivory white, sports seats and fine-wood trim fineline anthracite.

The 3 litre and 3 litre twin-turbo engines are expected to be the most popular in Australia, with the 2.5 litre six catering to those that value looks over outright power.

BMW has made no secret of their intent to pinch customers away from Mercedes-Benz's SLK, and with the new Z4 now boasting a folding metal hardtop, more luxury and, in the sDrive35i, a brilliantly powerful engine, the SLK's dominance of the luxo-roadster market is bound to be challenged.
