Audi will give its all-new Q5 mid-size SUV its first-ever appearance Down Under at the Melbourne International Motor Show in February, giving Aussies their first good look at Audi's newest addition to its ever-expanding lineup.
The Audi Q5, which is already on sale in Europe, will be the centrepiece of the Audi display at Melbourne and is expected to generate significant sales in Australia when it launches. Exactly when it is to go on sale locally is still a mystery for now, but we're guessing Audi will spill the beans on February 27.
While the monolithic Q7 is built around a derivative of the Volkswagen Touareg's and Porsche Cayenne's 7L platform, the Q5 rides on the same B8 architecture that underpins the A4 sedan and A5 coupe. The less heavy-duty chassis and a more car-like rearward bias for its quattro all-wheel-drive system should endow the Q5 with better on-road handling, while the smaller overall dimensions should endear it to SUV buyers looking for something a little less... massive than the Q7.
Unfortunately, the Q5 can't match its bigger-brother for styling. While the Q7 is all bulk and muscle the Q5 simply looks like an overgrown wagon, but our opinions may change, for we still haven't seen it up close and personal.
Final judgement will be reserved until we see it in the flesh, so make sure you check back with us on February 27 for our coverage of the Q5's Aussie launch.
