Over at Stuttgart, the wick gets wound up in increments. They appreciate that speed around a track is achieved by a combination of factors only one of which is power. So when Porsche advise that they have found an extra 15kw/20hp for their 2008 911 GT3 Cup car don’t snigger – instead realise that in a car as finely honed as the GT3 Cup that’s a lot!

All up, power for the 2008 model is a none-too-shabby 313kW/420hp. I say non-to-shabby as the GT3 Cup weighs in at a paltry 1,150kg, some 245kg lighter than a standard GT3. The power to weight ratio is an impressive 2.7kg per horsepower.

Porsche have significantly updated the back end of the GT3 Cup with the insertion of added air venting to further aid heat dispersion. A modified exhaust system that is said to sound similar to an F1’s exhaust along with PCCB Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes are available as options to those wanting to compete in the Mobil 1 Supercup.

The cog swapper is a six-speed sequential unit that allows for changes to be made under full power without the clutch being disengaged. This is achieved by momentarily cutting engine power to reduce load on the gearbox as each change is effected. The result is that gears in the GT3 Cup can be changed without a significant drop in revs – a modern take on flat changing a standard manual.

Only 265 examples will be built which is actually up on previous years with the first 26 examples earmarked for racing duties in the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup, Porsche Carrera Cups and GT3 Cup Challenges, with deliveries to begin in early March 2008.
