Ford in the U.S. has announced pricing for its “King of the Road” Mustang, the 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR. Due to arrive in dealerships later this month, the super 'stang is stickered at $US79,995, a price which includes the gas guzzler tax.

Heated debate has rippled across the blogosphere with many thinking the GT500KR is overpriced. From where we sit with our government's fingers constantly rifling through our wallets, the pricing looks attractive – very attractive. But we do live in a country where it costs us more to buy a new VE SS Commodore (built right here in Adelaide) than our American friends do after it is shipped halfway across the world and dressed up in Pontiac drag.

But, enough whinging, because this is one of a number of new and upcoming American muscle cars that is worth a closer look. Aussies love their muscle cars and this Mustang variant is one with the lot.

"When the names Mustang and Shelby come together, the results are never anything less than amazing. Mustang has earned an endearing place in America's hearts, topping the sports car segment for 22 straight years. The GT500KR is sure to get those hearts pumping even faster," said Robert Parker, Ford Car Marketing manager.

The Shelby GT500KR is powered by a 403kW/540hp supercharged 5.4L V8 and benefits from a complete suspension re-work, to ensure the handling is up to both road and track use. Of course, even this Shelby version of the Mustang has to make do with a live rear axle which is so very ‘last century’. Ford is unlikely to line the GT500KR up against the Corvette ZR1 at the Nurburgring...

The designers' intention was to pay homage to the original 1968 Shelby GT500KR and they appear to have achieved their goal in that regard with many of the original car's design elements being fused with the modern Mustang's sheetmetal.

Only three factory options are available, a Shaker 1000 audio, a navigation system and Sirius satellite radio. Ford only intend to produce 1000 of these very special Mustangs this year with a further 700 to follow in 2009, making them an exclusive proposition.
