Ford have opened the floodgates and finally provided full details of their new FG Falcon range. To suggest that the FG Falcon is important to Ford is an understatement – the success or otherwise of this car will go a long way to determining Ford’s future as an Australian manufacturer.

The FG is a full rework of the previous generation BF platform and Ford should be commended on the result. As far as large four door family cars go, the Falcon is arguably one of the smartest looking vehicles of its type - anywhere. With strong European influences and more than a hint of Mondeo, the only possible criticism is that some were hoping for more differentiation over the previous generation BF.

Ford have worked hard on the 4.0-litre I6 engine, an Australian icon that is sadly due for replacement in 2010. As a result, the FG benefits from an in-line six range that is at its peak. Power is up, along with efficiency and feedback from initial roadtests suggest that the turbo version found in the XR6T and G6E-T is an absolute stormer, with 0-100km/h times in the very low five second bracket being ‘unofficially’ recorded.

Standard kit now includes Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) on the petrol models along with dual front airbags, front side head/thorax airbags and the Beltminder® system for front seat occupants. These safety features are now standard across the FG range, from the XT upwards. Ford have submitted the FG Falcon for ANCAP crash testing and are hopeful that this will be the first Australian made vehicle to achieve a 5-star crash rating.
