The new and absolutely stunning 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT-8 has had its pricing announced – twice. First time around the price was listed as $US37,995 and most recently the price has been re-announced as starting at $US40,995.

According to the guys at Autoblog, who contacted Chrysler, the reason for the increase is a $US2,100 “gas-guzzler” penalty that has been incurred by the new Challenger SRT-8. It’s all a part of the price you pay in the US for buying a car equipped with a 6.1-litre V8 that is averaging somewhere between 18.5 and 19.5 mpg or 12.1 to 12.7 L/100km.

Given the 6.1-litre V8 is a 316kW/425hp Hemi and the Challenger is undoubtedly one of the all-time hottest pieces of American iron in the history of American iron, I can’t see the sales being overly affected by the price increasing before the first car is even sold. Check out the “street-racing” video advertisement below for the new Challenger.

It’s just a damn shame we won’t be seeing the Challenger in Australia.
