Nissan has crowned its beefy workhorse, the Navara, with a new four-door King Cab. With 1855mm of tray, the new King Cab boasts a longer load bed for trade and recreational buyers, and class-leading torque and towing capability.

The new model can only help Nissan’s strong showing in the ‘work and play’ market segment. The D40 Navara is Nissan Australia’s biggest selling model with close to 9,000 sold so far this calendar year. “The new Navara King Cab is destined to play an important role in tightening Nissan’s grip on the light commercial vehicle market,” Dan Thompson, CEO of Nissan Australia, said.

“Many Navara customers have something big to tow, and with the 4x4’s class-topping 403Nm torque and a 3000kg towing capacity (equalling class-best) across the range, that should be no problem.”

With two conventional doors, two ‘suicide’ doors and no B-pillar to impede entry (like, hello RX8), the King Cab allows easy access for passengers to a pair of fold-down rear seats. We’re not sure you’d whack ‘Stretch, Jumbo and Shorty’ in the back – the extra seating may only be short-haul propositions – but, when not in use, the seats can be folded away to allow room for tools or luggage.

And, for those who like to ensure that the ‘royal butt’ is being conveyed in appropriate comfort, Nissan has included a premium King Cab ST-X with the new variant.

Keeping the show moving, Nissan’s muscular 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine (producing 126kW and a grunt-laden 403Nm torque) can be mated to a six-speed manual (with a ‘long’ overdrive top gear for better economy) or the five-speed automatic.

After hours, the King Cab’s 205mm ground clearance, steep approach and departure angles, and long wheelbase, should ensure it finds a lot of friends looking for a tough out-doors recreational workhorse.

Three new models are available; the RX King Cab Chassis and ST-X King Cab Chassis, and the ST-X King Cab Pick-Up (that’d be the ‘ute’) which will hit the wallet starting at $38,160 for the RX King Cab Chassis; $41,160 for the ST-X King Cab Chassis; and $42,660 for the ST-X King Cab Ute. For the five-speed auto add $2,250

We’ll review it in the next month and give you the drum on its performance.
