There is a new Top Gear test track champion, unofficially at least, with the Caparo T1 road registerable completely insane race car breaking through the fastest time by an astonishing seven seconds to post a 1 min 10.6 second lap. The previous record is held by the Koenigsegg CCX.

The Caparo weighs less than a Formula One car, has double the power to weight ratio of the Bugatti Veyron and is able to sprint from 0-100kmh in just 2.5 seconds. Its aero body work endows the Caparo with the ability to generate up to 3g of lateral force.

Unfortunately, the Caparo T1 is also developing a rather nasty reputation with recent testers enduring numerous breakdowns, suspension failure and even a serious fire that burnt one of the Fifth Gear presenters. The Top Gear video is well worth watching if just for the chequered history of this machine.

Oh…and the Top Gear test track lap time was not made official as the Caparo T1 did not satisfy one of the criteria required to post an official time – it was too low to the ground to enable the successful negotiation of a speed hump.

“The model we supplied to Top Gear was one of our final engineering vehicles without adjustable ride height and electronic active driver control systems which are standard on our production models,” said Caparo T1 designer, Ben Scott-Geddes.

The Caparo Group are hopeful that Top Gear will give them another opportunity to place the Caparo T1 in it’s rightful place at the top of the lap board.
