Used car review: BMW E46 3-Series 1998-2005
The baseline was the four-cylinder 318i, with a capacity closer to 1.9 litres.
Producing 87 kW and 180 Nm, it was priced from $52,950 for the five-speed manual, the four-speed auto adding $1700.
The 2.5-litre six-cylinder 125 kW/ 245 Nm 323i cost $66,900 as a five-speed manual, adding $2500 for the five-speed auto. The auto-only 142 kW/280 Nm 328i - a 2.8-litre - topped the range at $84,950.
Standard equipment included eight airbags, traction control, ABS, airconditioning, power windows and remote central locking. The 323i added dual climate control, alloy wheels, cruise control, fog lights and leather upholstery. Meanwhile, the 328i added power seats with memory, a trip computer, six-CD audio and mobile phone wiring.
In 2000 BMW added the 318i Executive, allowing the price of the standard 318i manual to drop to $51,500. A 320i (a 2.2-litre six producing 125 kW and 210 Nm) was added, the 325i (141 kW/ 245 Nm 2.5-litre) replaced the 323i, and the 328i with the 330i (170 kW/300 Nm 3.0-litre). The Executive was priced from $55,500, the 320i $60,500, the 325i $67,405 and the 330i $89,380.
In 2001, the first minor exterior changes came. More importantly, the 318i was upgraded with a new generation 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 105 kW and 200 Nm, while the price rose between $600 and $1900 depending on the model.
In 2003, stability control became standard on all sedans.
In 2004, the 320i, 325i and 330i were rebranded with Sport and Exceutive badges.
The 318i was the big winner, adding Bluetooth, a multifunction steering wheel, cruise control and trip computer.
This adjustment signalled the run-out of the range, which was completed in April 2005 when the E90 3 Series was launched.
Our pick
The 325i walks the line between the economy of the 318i and the expense of the 330i. It's a great compromise.
