2007 Subaru Outback 3.0R Premium review: Quick drive
The Outback is based on the Liberty mid-sized wagon, sharing technology, including its light-duty all-wheel-drive system
The Outback is based on the Liberty mid-sized wagon, sharing technology, including its light-duty all-wheel-drive system. Styling, interior details and the boosted ride height are notable differences.
Catering for moderate off-road applications means the Outback loses a little of the Liberty's crisp on-road handling. But for the category, it remains among the best to drive.
It is strictly a five-seater and not particularly spacious. Subaru recognised the need for a bigger vehicle in the new Tribeca.
The Premium model is powered by a 3-litre horizontal six that produces 180 kW and 297 Nm. Mated to a five-speed auto, it is smooth and revs freely but lacks low-end pulling power.
Drivers can switch between economy, normal and sports mode via a dial called SI-Drive.
The Premium's official fuel consumption claim is 11.1 L/100 km on premium unleaded fuel, reflecting the Outback's lighter weight than most of its rivals. It gets a three-star emissions rating.
The Outback has a full complement of airbags, electronic handling aids, DataDot security, climate control, alloy wheels, six-CD audio, leather upholstery, dual sunroofs and bi-xenon headlights.
