Holden Cruze SRI-V
Australians have always loved their large cars but times are changing and the iconic six-cylinder sedan is disappearing from driveways across the country.
Which is why Holden has decided to begin building a small model alongside the Commodore, which has been its best-selling car for 15 consecutive years.
It's a bold move, given local brands abandoned small cars throughout the 1990s.
The Australian-made Cruze Series 2 looks largely unchanged from the version that's been imported from Korea since 2009, though it has new bumpers, revised headlights and a new grille.
It's under the skin where the big changes lie, with the option of a new turbocharged petrol engine and a gruntier turbo diesel teaming with revised suspension tuned for local conditions.
For now, the Cruze is only available as a sedan with the choice of three engines but a hatch is due by the end of the year.
When that model arrives, Australia's first locally made small car since the 1990s could topple the dominant Commodore for outright sales supremacy.
