Ford Mondeo Zetec Wagon
Belgium may be best known for its beer, chocolates and world-beating women tennis players but the country also has a proud automotive tradition. Audi, Volvo and Ford all build cars in Belgium, with Ford producing the mid-sized Mondeo in the town of Genk.
But while Stella Artois and Guylian chocolates have both agreed with Australian tastes, the Mondeo has struggled to gain a foothold.
It sold in Australia in less than spectacular numbers in the late 1990s, was dropped from the local line-up in 2001, then returned in 2007 but has failed to trouble the top sellers, despite picking up Drive's mid-sized Car of the Year award for two years running.
As part of a model update, Ford added a wagon version in July last year while culling the sedan from the range.
It boldly predicted the wagon would take sales away from Holden's popular Commodore Sportwagon. So far the predicted stoush has failed to eventuate, with Mondeo sales dipping last year despite the expanded line-up.
The Mondeo wagon comes in two models: a no-frills LX version and the more-expensive but better-equipped Zetec, which we've tested here. A diesel version is expected to arrive in the second half of this year.
