2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Touring Cabrio review: Quick drive

Before the 300C made Chrysler fashionable, it was the retro-styled PT Cruiser compact sedan that gave the US brand at least a taste of cool. It was further chilled by replacing the metal roof with a soft-top, creating the PT Cruiser Cabrio. Launched in Australia in mid-2006, the Cabrio has a triple-layer canvas roof that is unlatched by hand. It takes 10 seconds to open and can be stowed manually under a soft cover.
It comes in two specification levels, the Touring and more expensive Limited. Both share a dour 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 105 kW and 214 Nm. Transmission choices are a standard five-speed manual or optional four-speed auto. The Touring starts at $35,890. Add $2000 for the automatic.
Standard equipment includes dual front and side airbags, ABS, traction control, air-conditioning, alloy wheels, cruise control, remote central locking, foglights, powered driver's seat, CD player and trip computer.
The PT Cruiser Cabrio has seating for four, with adequate space in the rear by drop-top standards. But it is based on an aged design, so along with the sun you get plenty of rattles and squeaks from a body weakened by the loss of its roof.
