Volkswagen is reportedly working on a new SUV ahead of a 2018 debut. Interestingly, it's expected to wear the German carmaker’s familiar ‘Golf’ name.
A report by UK magazine CAR suggests the new project will be yet another addition to the booming compact SUV market, with Volkswagen keen to strike while the segment is still on the up.
The Golf SUV would sit somewhere between the existing Volkswagen Tiguan and the newly-released Golf Alltrack, and is expected to feature a more ‘crossover’ look as a ‘jacked-up’ hatchback.
Those looking for a true 4WD would be advised to look elsewhere however, as the Golf SUV is expected to mirror most of its compact SUV rivals in offering minimal off-road ability - in ‘standard’ form, that is.
Both front- and all-wheel-drive could be available along with a range of four-cylinder engines and perhaps a plug-in hybrid, while the options catalogue is expected to be big.
