Victorian Government announces hundreds of new electric-car charging points

Four different electric-car charging projects have been given the green light, with financial backing being provided by Victoria's State Government.

The Victorian Government has announced it is funding the installation of 214 new electric-vehicle chargers throughout the state.

Four projects will deliver 214 chargers spread across 116 sites, with $2.2 million in funding being provided by the government.

One of the projects will create four transportable stand-alone solar-powered battery and electric-vehicle chargers, designed to be moved to popular holiday destinations during periods of peak demand – such as summer holidays.

Another project will see a total of 100 electric-car chargers mounted on street light poles across three inner-city council areas.

But not all of the charging ports will be available to the public – one of the projects being funded is for 10 outlets to be installed in an apartment complex car-park.

Incoming requirements under the National Construction Code 2022 require all apartment blocks to have charging ports installed for every single car space.

The fourth project will see the installation of 100 smart connected charges to homes and businesses across Victoria with the ability to detect surplus energy created from rooftop solar panels, diverting the excess electricity to charge battery-powered vehicles.

The Victorian Government is targeting 50 per cent of all passenger vehicles sales to be electric by 2030, with the aim of reaching net zero emissions by 2045.
