Track test: Porsche Taycan electric car versus BMW M8 Gran Coupe
A German magazine has conducted an epic petrol versus electric car track test, with surprising results.
The new Porsche Taycan electric car has lined up against a BMW M8 Gran Coupe Competition in a head-to-head track test in Germany in the hands of a race driver thanks to AutoBild magazine.
While we won’t give away the result – even though you might guess it – we will say it was closer than many would expect.
For diehard petrol heads, the test shows there is still plenty of life left in fossil-fuel-powered performance cars.
For electric car nerds, there may be some bragging rights given how close the performance was among these two vehicles.
The Porsche Taycan Turbo S has a combined peak output of 560kW/1050Nm thanks to two electric motors that deliver all-wheel-drive. It has a claimed 0 to 100kmh time of 2.8 seconds and weighs 2339kg.
The BMW M8 Gran Coupe Competition edition is powered by a twin turbo 4.0-litre V8 (460kW/750Nm) matched to an eight-speed auto and all-wheel-drive. It has a claimed 0 to 100kmh time of 3.2 seconds and weighs 1945kg.
The vehicles were track tested at the Lausitzring, in the north-east of Germany near the borders of Poland and the Czech Republic.
