Tesla’s Full Self-Driving could arrive in Australia this year
Tesla boss Elon Musk suggests the company’s autonomous driving tech could debut in Australia in a matter of months.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed the company’s autonomous driving software could be rolled out to Australian customers as soon as late 2022.
Musk responded to a tweet asking about the beta program for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology on right-hand-drive Tesla vehicles, saying it would happen “probably later this year”.
FSD allows the vehicle to navigate itself on city and residential streets, with lane-changing and traffic sign recognition available under driver supervision.
While the language used by the Tesla boss wasn’t definitive, it appears as if the regulatory roadblocks to offering FSD in countries outside of the US could soon disappear.
The comment comes just days after the UNECE World Forum for the Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations recommended lifting the speed limit for autonomous vehicles from 60 to 130km/h – with Australia a signatory to the standards.
Despite Musk having a history of missing promised dates, all the pieces seem to be aligning for FSD to make its debut Down Under in the foreseeable future.
