Shocking footage shows car plunging down stairs in San Francisco

Somehow, the occupants of a white sedan that plunged over a steep staircase in a busy suburb of San Francisco walked away unscathed.

Security footage has captured the dramatic moment a car plummeted off a steep staircase in a busy suburb of San Francisco, leaving chaos in its wake but, miraculously, its occupants unharmed.

The incident occurred on the evening of July 23 in the San Francisco neighbourhood of Dolores Heights, when a white Lincoln sedan drove through a barricade at the end of a dead-end street before plunging skimming down a staircase and landing on the street below.

The car flipped in the process, taking out several trees and landing on its roof, but luckily avoided hitting several pedestrians in the area – with bystanders able to assist all of the vehicle's occupants in safely exiting the car.

According to the San Francisco Fire Department, it was a "non-injury collision" and witnesses said "all occupants fled the scene" shortly after the accident.

"The crew of Truck 7 confirmed no injuries and assisted a tow truck to ensure the safety of the area during the removal of the car. Witnesses stated that the driver drove off the dead end at Cumberland and landed at 19th and Sanchez," the San Francisco Fire Department said in a post uploaded to social media platform Twitter.

Footage from a second security camera captured the incident from another angle, revealing the sedan was travelling at a high speed as it approached the end of the dead-end street, with no clear attempts to slow down.

The number of occupants in the vehicle is yet to be confirmed, but the footage appears to show three individuals exiting the vehicle.

A resident who attended the scene of crash described the aftermath to local news station KPIX, claiming the car's occupants were "up to no good".

"There was a woman pulling out a guy, all bloody, and the guy had a full face mask, all black, dressed in black," the neighbour said.

"She was in black, red hair, yelling at them, 'We have three minutes till the cops come! We have three minutes, hurry up!'. There was another guy and there was another guy still stuck in the car and they were, like, 'Just leave him! Leave him!"

"We saw what was going on. There [were] bottles of alcohol pouring out of their car and they were all bloodied and you could tell they were up to no good... They didn't want our help. She said, 'Don't touch me!'"

According to KPIX, police are yet to locate the occupants of the car.
