Road toll charges waived in Brisbane as floods wreak havoc

Pay roads have been opened up across the city as public transport goes down.

Road tolls have been waived for all motorists in Brisbane as severe flooding in the Sunshine State wreaks havoc on local transport networks.

Drive understands public trains and buses are currently not operating across much of the city, and many stretches of highway – including the Inner City Bypass and Milton Road – have been damaged or rendered unusable by days of heavy rain.

In a bid to reroute traffic and provide safer travel routes, the Clem 7, Legacy Way, Go Between bridge, and Airport Link have been temporarily opened up to all drivers without charge.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner posted to Twitter this morning: "I’ve made the decision that Council will cover the motorists’ costs on Council-controlled Brisbane toll roads ... This will continue until at least Sunday."

However, Mr Schrinner noted: "This will not resolve congestion and we encourage people to avoid unnecessary travel through this area."

Spokespeople for the Brisbane City Council were unable to immediately provide further information when contacted by Drive. However, this story will be updated when it becomes available.

It is not safe to drive through flood-affected roads under almost any circumstance. You can read more by clicking here.
