Porsche unveils $1 million electric boat with Macan Electric power

Sports-car specialist Porsche has unveiled an electric boat that was built in collaboration with German specalist Frauscher Shipyard.

Dubbed the ‘Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom Air’, the boat comes with a starting price just shy of $1 million ($AU925,000).

According to the media statement from Porsche, the 850 Fantom Air makes use of elements from Porsche and Audi's upcoming PPE electric-car platform.

As previously reported by Drive, PPE is expected to underpin the upcoming electric Macan as well as future mid-size and large models from Audi.

As with the forthcoming electric Porsche Macan, the Frauscher boat makes use of a 100kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

This is housed beneath the rear lounge area at the rear of the 8.67-metre vessel, and powers a single 400kW electric motor.

Frauscher is yet to reveal acceleration figures, but claims the vessel has a limited top speed of 85km/h.

As for range, an exact figure was not provided in the release, but Frauscher notes a “journey time of two to three hours” could be possible, depending on the driving style.

On the charging front, making use of Porsche’s 800-volt architecture means the 850 Fantom Air is capable of charging at up to 250kW on a DC fast-charging station.

At this rate, the boatmaker claims the 100kWh battery will be able to be charged from 10 per cent state of charge to 80 per cent in “well under” 30 minutes.

11kW AC charging is also offered as standard for when a DC fast charger isn’t available.

Four driving modes are available on the boat, including docking, range, sport, and sport plus.

The latter two modes mirror what’s available in Porsche’s road-going cars.

According to the boatmaker, these driving modes affect throttle response and feature different speed limits.

On the inside, Frauscher claims Porsche. Studio F. A was responsible for designing the cockpit, or “helmstand” of the boat.

A Porsche steering wheel was used here, which is reportedly wrapped with artificial leather in order to increase resistance to salt water.

The release also notes the ignition is located to the left of the steering wheel, to imitate Porsche road cars.

A total of nine passengers are able to be accommodated on the 850 Fantom Air, with two lounge areas onboard.

Other interior highlights include a 12-inch infotainment display, as well as an audio system with WiFi and bluetooth connectivity.

Frauscher notes just 25 examples of the Porsche-powered electric boat are planned for production, with deliveries due to commence from 2024.
