Victoria Police targeting speeding drivers in statewide blitz

Speeding drivers are on notice, with Victoria Police announcing a 24-hour blitz on excessive speed this Saturday 20 May 2023.

Police across the state will be targeting speeders as part of the National Road Safety Week, which runs until Sunday.

"Speeding continues to be overrepresented in fatal and serious injury collisions, which is why we’re making speeding drivers our focus during National Road Safety Week," Assistant Commissioner Road Policing Glenn Weir said in a statement.

"We ask all motorists to slow down and drive so others survive – it’s so simple yet could help prevent another tragedy."

The National Road Safety Week was created by Peter Frazer of Safer Australian Roads and Highways, who lost his 23-year-old daughter in a car crash in 2012.

The Victorian road toll currently sits at 116 – a 31 per cent increase compared to the same time last year – while the national road toll is currently at 414 lives lost so far in 2023.

“We make no apologies for enforcing speed limits and penalising motorists who put themselves and other road users at risk," Assistant Commissioner Weir said.

"Sticking to the speed limit is something we can all do to help reduce trauma on our roads."
