NSW drivers scolded after more than 1300 offences recorded daily – report

The NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley has issued a stern warning to drivers after a police operation recorded more than 15,000 offences over a 12-day period.

According to a report from Yahoo News, NSW Police has so far detected more than 1300 drivers doing the wrong thing each day during 'Operation Katana', of which 5441 were related to speeding.

"Every single person committing these 15,689 offences in just 12 days has broken the law. They have endangered themselves, and everyone else on the roads,” Minister Catley told Yahoo News.

In the first few days of the operation, offices allegedly detected an Audi travelling at 117km/h on Sydney's Anzac Bridge – a 60km/h zone – and issued an infringement notice to a 22-year-old driver.

A further 373 were caught drink driving, while 341 were found using their mobile phones while driving. Police also issued 125 fines for seatbelt and helmet non-compliance.

"These numbers speak for themselves. I honestly can’t imagine what more our police can do than this massive effort," the minister said.

"We’ve seen too many tragic incidences in recent weeks of people killed and families torn apart because of speeding drivers. This is reckless and criminal behaviour."
