Nissan unveils ‘limitless’ vision for ultimate GT-R

Italdesign partnership bears fruit in eye-catching Nismo show car.

Nissan has marked the 50th anniversary of its GT-R sports car with a stunning concept car pushing the boundaries of design.

Styled by Nissan and built by boutique studio Italdesign, the Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign transforms the track-honed Nissan GT-R Nismo coupe into a work of art.

Finished in black with gold inlays, the machine features a lowered roofline that contributes to a more aggressive stance than the standard GT-R.

Floating quad taillamps offer a glimpse as to how future GT-Rs may look, as do narrow, blade-like LED headlights on the front end.

Set to make its public debut in Europe in coming days, the machine will no doubt raise questions about the future of the GT-R, which is one of the oldest models on sale.

Nissan senior vice president for global design, Alfonso Albaisa, jumped at the chance to work on the project, saying “how often do you get to ask, 'what if we created a GT-R without limits,' and then actually get to build it?”.

"This is a rare window in time when two big moments intersect: 50 years of Italdesign shaping the automotive world and 50 years of Nissan generating excitement through our iconic GT-R,” he said.

“So to celebrate this convergence, Nissan and Italdesign created this custom GT-R to mark 50 years of engineering leadership.”

The machine features a tuned version of the GT-R Nismo’s twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V6, boosted to produce impressive 530kW and 730Nm outputs. As with its production cousin, the GT-R concept drives all four wheels through a dual-clutch automatic transmission.
