New cars spied this week

New models from Hyundai, Lexus, Mercedes, Peugeot and Renault caught out this week.

Hyundai i30

Hyundai's new volume-selling small car has been spotted undergoing testing.

While these early images are heavily camouflaged, the overall lines of the new i30 are apparent.

The popular hatch will get Hyundai's new styling treatment seen in the Genesis and new Tucson mid-size SUV, which constitutes a large hexagonal grille with slimmer sportier headlights.

Some styling cues were revealed last week when the South Korean brand released a teaser image of its compact Elantra sedan, which should share the same look as the i30 hatch.

The new i30 should be revealed next year with production to start in 2017.

Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe

Mercedes-Benz has recently revealed its new mid-size GLC SUV, and now its coupe sibling has been spotted testing.

The new coupe-styled SUV will rival the BMW X4.

The GLC is based on the German brand's C-Class sedan, which took out overall honours in Drive's Car of the Year competition last year.

The coupe - which has only been shown in concept form - isn't expect to differ too differently from the standard GLC except for a reworked rear.

It should also get the same model range which includes three engine variants in Australia, a 2.1-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel, with two different tunes, and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol.

Mercedes-Benz's tuning arm AMG may well get its hands on the coupe to create a go-fast SUV.

The GLC Coupe is expected to be officially revealed later in the year or early 2016.

Mercedes-Maybach E-Class

Mercedes-Benz's luxury arm, Maybach, is converting the new E-Class into an ultra-luxurious limousine.

The Mercedes-Maybach E-Class has been caught testing and will feature a longer wheelbase than the regular sedan and extra emphasis will be put on back seat comfort.

The regular Mercedes-Benz E-Class will share the same rear-drive architecture as the new C-Class sedan and is expected to grow in size slightly.

The new mid-size sedan will likely benefit from the use of aluminium to help reduce weight and increase efficiency.

The new E-Class line-up - which is expected in 2017 – will feature a suite of new engines including a return to the inline six-cylinder engine, which is part of Mercedes-Benz's simplified modular engine strategy.

The head of Mercedes-Benz research and development, Professor Thomas Weber, told Drive at the 2015 Geneva motor show that the new inline six-cylinder engine could be used in the next-generation E-Class.

Weber said the shift to an inline six-cylinder would allow it to use the basic architecture of the four-cylinder engine – in a similar way that two four-cylinders are used to create the latest AMG V8.

"Looking forward it's now clear we are back to the situation that should we stay with a V6 family only or is there opportunity to do something in combination four- and six?," he said. "It could be that we go in a direction that we link these overall line-up together in the coming years because we are well prepared and, yes, there are some milestones we are starting now," said Webber.

The next-generation E-Class will get the AMG treatment and will also feature a hybrid variant.

The new model is expected in 2016.

Peugeot 3008

Peugeot's high-riding wagon is due for an overhaul, and spy shots indicate the new 3008 will take on a more traditional SUV guise to help boost its sales in China.

The Pug is expected to get a new more rugged design and its interior will get an overhaul similar to the new 308, which is much more functional and does away with the many buttons of its predecessors.

The new SUV should get a hybrid drivetrain as European car makers and governments continually aim to reduce emissions.

Peugeot's mid-size SUV should arrive in 2016.

Lexus TX

Lexus has been absent from the seven-seat SUV market, but that is about to change with the new TX -  a seven seat variant of the RX - seen undergoing testing.

The new family-hauler will be closely associated with the Japanese brand's RX SUV but will be slightly higher and longer.

The TX will feature Lexus' new design language with the signature spindle grille and 'arrowhead' headlights.

In keeping with Lexus' engine line-up the new SUV should get a hybrid drivetrain as well as a petrol option and possibly a turbocharged variant which features in its IS and NX range, potentially with a larger displacement than found in those models.

While the TX nomenclature isn't confirmed, Toyota has trademarked the moniker.

The TX should break cover at some point in 2016.

Mercedes-AMG SL63

Mercedes-Benz's ballistic roadster is getting a refresh, and spy photographers have caught it testing.

The new convertible will get a revised grille, hood and front apron as well as some reworked taillights.

Renault Megane

French brand Renault is readying a new Megane to take on newer models from competitors like the VW Golf, Ford Focus and Peugeot 308.

The updated Megane's styling will bring it into line with the current Clio and Captur models.

The Megane will be built off a new platform that is shared with Nissan and is already used on the Pulsar.

The new Megane will offer a variety of smaller turbocharged engines found in other Renault models like the 1.2-litre turbo four-cylinder found in the range topping Captur.

The Megane is expected to be officially revealed at the upcoming Frankfurt motor show in September.
