New car review: Hyundai i40
The i40 is a car that definitely stands out among the mid-size mainstream.
When Hyundai's mid-sized i40 appeared in showrooms last year it was seen as something of an anomaly. It came in just one body style – and a station wagon at that – called the i40 Tourer.
Somewhat belatedly, the Tourer has been joined by a sedan variant. As with its two-box brother, the i40 sedan was designed primarily for the European market and so comes with the option of a 1.7-litre diesel engine that sells alongside a 2.0-litre petrol version.
Styled with a giddy mix of swooping curves and sharp angles, looking not unlike the larger i45, it's a car that definitely stands out among the mid-size mainstream. As with just about any market segment these days, the medium-sedan scrum is ultra-competitive, so contenders have to be better-than-average to rise above the pack.
