Mercedes-Benz confirms X-Class price and details
Luxury brand’s anticipated ute to cost from $45k
There won't be as much sticker shock as first expected for Mercedes-Benz' highly-anticipated X-Class ute.
The German brand has revealed initial price and specification details for its dual-cab pick-up range ahead of its Australian showroom arrival in April 2018, confirming it will initially be offered with 13 different models and a starting price of $45,490 (plus on-road costs).
It will still come with a premium over mainstream rivals like the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger and the Nissan Navara on which it is based, with the entry-level X220d costing costing around $10k more than a equivalent model while the initial range-topping four-cylinder X250d in high-grade Power specification will be among the most expensive in its class with a price tag of $64,500 (plus on-road costs). More powerful V6-powered X350d models will arrive later in 2018, which are expected to push into new boundaries for dual-cab pick-ups with a price tag of around $80,000.
Until then, the X220d, with a single-turbo version of the 2.3-litre four-cylinder diesel that produces 120kW of power and 403Nm of torque, will only be offered in the base-level Pure trim either in cab-chassis configuration or with a tray that Mercedes calls 'Load Bed' and with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive transmissions. A six-speed manual is the standard gearbox, and the only choice for two-wheel drive variants, while four-wheel drive models - and the X250d that is exclusively offered with a 4Matic transmission and features a more powerful 140kW/450Nm twin-turbo engine - can be equipped with an optional seven-speed automatic for an additional $2900.
The Pure specification is designed more as a working vehicle, as it comes with unpainted black bumpers, 17-inch steel wheels, conventional halogen headlights, cloth interior trim, regular air conditioning and a basic audio system.
It does, however, feature a reverse camera, brake assist, lane keeping assistance and tyre pressure monitors. A Plus Pack is available on all Pure variants which includes adjustable load rails in the tray and parking sensors.
The mid-level X250d Progressive features body-coloured bumpers, 17-inch alloy wheels, Garmin sat nav, higher-grade cloth trim and adjustable load rails in the tray to help secure items. Progessive models can be upgraded with an optional Comfort Package that brings electric adjustment for the front seats, faux leather trim and dual-zone climate control while a Style Package adds LED headlights, partial LED taillights, an electric rear window, tinted glass, side steps, roof rails and 18-inch alloys.
The top-grade X250d Power, which is only available with a fitted tray, adds a touch of luxury expected from the three-pointed star, including larger 18-inch alloys, chrome exterior highlights, LED headlights, faux leather trim, electrically-adjustable front seats, a more comprehensive infotainment system, keyless start and dual-zone climate control. It also has a few extra safety features, such as a 360-degree camera and park assist as standard. A Style Package for the Power specification can be ordered, which adds the electric rear window, tinted glass, side steps, roof rails and even larger 19-inch alloys.
A Winter Package is available on all model grades too, which adds heated front seats and headlight washers.
Pricing and details for the flagship X350d variants will be confirmed closer to its arrival later in 2018.
