Mercedes-Benz 300SL Tool Kit for sale
A rare piece of Mercedes-Benz history is for sale, for the fraction of the cost of the car.
As one of the most iconic classic cars in history, the Mercedes-Benz 300SL commands resale prices exceeding AU$1 million, but for collectors wanting a piece of German engineering antiquity without the large price tag, the Mercedes-Benz 300SL toolkit is worth a look.
Only two models of the coveted Mercedes-Benz 300SL were made, the Coupe (gullwing) and Roadster (convertible) with both being produced in limited numbers between 1954-57 (Coupe) and 1955-63 (Roadster).
All Mercedes-Benz cars of the time came equipped with a toolkit, put together specifically for each model, allowing owners to complete maintenance on their prized Benz themselves.
Now, a 300SL toolkit is featured on an online auction site, Bring A Trailer, curated by the current owner over several years to resemble the original toolkit offered with the sports car.
The kit includes a set of open-ended wrenches and a drain plug wrench by Dowidat, a Felo DBGM driver handle and bits, Heyco pliers, Allen keys, a tommy bar, sockets, a fuel injection pump line tool, a wheel removal fork, a box of fuses, and a Messko Hauser tire pressure gauge.
Compiled according to the ‘Typ 300SL List of Equipment’ the toolkit comes in a reproduction tan vinyl and green canvas roll and holds tools in 14 separate pockets and fold-out flaps.
Four double open-ended wrenches are cast with Mercedes-Benz lettering and range in size from 8mm to 19mm, alongside a 6/7mm combination spanner and a single-ended 12mm version from Dowidat.
The hero piece 4-bar Messko-Hauser tire pressure gauge is stored in its own vinyl-covered wooden box, bearing the Mercedes-Benz tri-star logo.
The 60-70 year old tools have some marks of their vintage pedigree, but it is unlikely to detract from the desirability of the automotive treasure.
In 2018, a similar Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Tool Kit sold for US$20,500 on the Bring A Trailer site, believed to have been from an estate sale for a family who reportedly owned multiple Gullwings.
The Mercedes-Benz 300SL toolkit currently being offered sits at US$3000, with bidding closing on Tuesday, 16 February 2021 at around 6:00am AEST.
