Lotus Evija X electric supercar caught on camera on the Nurburgring

Photos of the Lotus Evija X electric supercar have surfaced while the vehicle undergoes testing on the Nurburgring race track in Germany.

The Evija X has significant design alterations over the standard model, including a massive rear wing to optimise downforce on a race track.

It's possible the British sports-car brand could be aiming to set some kind of electric-vehicle record.

The current lap record for an electric vehicle stands at 6 minutes and 5.336 seconds, set by the Volkswagen ID.R racer.

Exterior modifications on the Lotus electric racer includes the removal of headlights, brake lights, and wing mirrors.

And the body has been designed to optimise airflow. Downforce is further improved with the addition of carbon-fibre side skirts, a massive front wing, and aero-enhancing 'canards' (winglets).

Adding to its race pedigree, the Lotus Evija X has centre-lock wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero slick tyres.

The electric supercar broke cover as the Lotus continues to struggle to keep pace with established supercar brands.

The company reported fewer than 2000 sales globally for each of the past three years, but boldly predicts it can produce 100,000 vehicles by 2028 – its 80th year. This year marks its 75th anniversary.
