Lewis Hamilton to change his name in honour of mother

The seven-time F1 champion says he is introducing his mother's maiden name into his official title.

Mercedes-AMG Formula one driver Lewis Hamilton has revealed he is the process of changing his name.

Speaking to media at the Expo world fair in Dubai, Hamilton said he is planning to add his mother's maiden name to his own – and that he is "working on" the process and that it "would take place soon".

Lewis Hamilton's mother – Carmen Larbalestier – divorced father Anthony Hamilton when the F1 star was a child. However, Hamilton lived with his mother up until the age of 12.

It means Lewis Hamilton will likely be known a Lewis Hamilton-Larbalestier before the 2022 F1 season is complete.

Adding reason to why he wants to change his name, the seven-time F1 champion added that he “(I) don’t really fully understand the whole idea when people get married then the woman loses her name ... And my mum, I really want her name to continue on with the Hamilton name.”

The first round of the 2022 F1 Grand Prix is the Bahrain GP set for March 21, 2022. Lewis Hamilton is targeting a record eighth World Championship, after he lost the 2021 season under contentious circumstances.
