Lamborghini to unveil first electric concept car next week

Lamborghini will showcase its electric concept car at one of the most prestigious cars show in the US – previewing a high-riding super sedan which is due to enter production in 2028.

Italian car-maker Lamborghini has confirmed its plans to reveal its first-ever electric concept car at next week’s Monterey Car Week in California – previewing the brand’s first move away from petrol-powered models.

As reported by UK publication Autocar, the concept car will preview Lamborghini’s electric high-riding super sedan, expected to go on sale overseas from 2028.

The publication claims the as-yet unnamed electric concept car’s design will be closely related to the Estoque sedan concept from 2008 which did not enter production.

The all-new electric car will be followed by a battery-powered successor to the brand’s best-selling Urus SUV in 2029, though there is no clear timeline on when the Italian marque’s supercars will ditch petrol power.

Lamborghini has already revealed a plug-in hybrid successor to the Aventador supercar – named Revuelto – while the Huracan’s electrified replacement is expected to be unveiled within the next 12 months.

A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the Urus SUV has recently been spied testing in Germany and is due in showrooms from 2024, using technology shared with the Audi Q8 TFSIe PHEV which has been confirmed for Australia.

As previously reported, Lamborghini is yet to announce its plans for electric-only models across its range – instead backing the development of synthetic fuels to keep its petrol engines alive up to and beyond the European Union’s ban on petrol and diesel cars by 2035.

Monterey Car Week runs from August 11 to 20, and is headlined by two major events for automotive reveals – The Quail and Pebble Beach.
