Jeep launches toughest model yet

Rubicon X brings additional capability to Wrangler platform

Jeep has returned to its roots by building a special-edition Wrangler that has the ultimate in go-anywhere ability.

The manufacturer claims its new Wrangler Rubicon X is "Jeep's most capable off-road car ever", which should lend it mud-crawling abilities few vehicles can manage.

Loaded with additional rock protection, electronic locking front and rear differentials and a low range transfer case that are optional extras on lesser Jeeps, the Rubicon X has the kind of credibility missing from the Wrangler's recent Dragon, Freedom and Polar cosmetic specials.

The four-door Rubicon X also gains a vented bonnet, a black fuel filler door and two-tone alloy wheels that feature red Jeep silhouettes painted between its spokes.

Fitted as standard with Chrysler's 209kW, 3.6-litre Pentastar V6, the Rubicon X has a five-speed automatic transmission that drives all four wheels.

On the inside, a special gauge cluster has additional readouts for transmission and coolant temperatures as well as oil and tyre pressures, and a 6.5-inch touch screen with satellite navigation to help stay on track.

Leather trim and heated front seats help occupants stay comfortable on the road or trail.
